The Unicorn Story in Scotland. In Celtic mythology the unicorn was a symbol of purity and innocence, as well as virility and power. All of this may have been the reason why Scotland chose it as its national animal. This occurred during the reign of Robert III in the late 14th century, with two unicorns appearing in the coat of arms.
